Senior Scam of the Week

Flat Tire Scam

In Colorado, scammers are targeting elderly women using a "flat tire" scam. These criminals damage the victim's tire, follow them, and then offer unsolicited help to fix the flat tire, using this opportunity to steal belongings from the car.

Scam Design: The scam begins with the perpetrators damaging the tire of the victim's vehicle. When the elderly victim notices the flat tire and stops, the scammers approach, pretending to be helpful mechanics. While pretending to assist, they steal valuables from the car, exploiting the victim's trust and distraction.

Takeaways

Be cautious of unsolicited help: If you have a flat tire, call a trusted person or roadside assistance service rather than accepting help from strangers.

Stay in your vehicle: Keep doors locked and windows up when approached by unknown individuals.

Regular maintenance: Ensure your car is well-maintained to avoid unexpected issues that could make you a target for scams.
